THE COMMERCIALIZATION OF CHRISTMAS...and every other holiday...

By Julia F. Lonan

I just recently learn about "Black Friday"...which according to Wikipedia "Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States, traditionally the beginning of the Christmas shopping season."

I am not going into the theology of Christmas...but what interest me is the "commercialization" of Christmas....and every other holiday that I can think of..... It is interesting to me that what supposed to be the season of love, kindness, family and togetherness is transformed into greed, pride and vanity; the best Christmas party, the best Christmas gift, the best Christmas clothes, the best Christmas decoration, the best Christmas everything.  Everyone is encourage to shop...shop...shop...and the Christmas shopping rave that started in America is beginning to infect the rest of the world, including us here in Indonesia.

I guess if I am a retailer and a business owner, this is what I want and need to boost my sales before the closing of this year's book. However, as a regular person I really wonder if all this shopping and spending is really necessary? Can't we just show our love by simply doing good? But then again....doing good is identify with giving something to someone....and that is traditional across culture.

So, is commercialization of Christmas a bad thing? A product of greed, pride and vanity? Or is it just simply because people are trying to show love, kindness and togetherness?
